In 2025, reasoning stopped being a research flex and became a product primitive.

Google announced Gemini 2.5 as a "thinking model" designed for complex problems, with strong reasoning and coding capabilities. Later at I/O 2025, Google expanded the Gemini 2.5 series with Deep Think, an enhanced reasoning mode for difficult math and coding tasks, along with native audio output and stronger tool-use security.

This matters because users do not care whether a model is "smart" in isolation. They care whether it can break down ambiguity, choose tools, keep context, and produce reliable outputs under constraints. Reasoning models are pushing AI products toward more deterministic workflows: plan, act, verify, explain, repeat.

For builders, the opportunity is clear. The real product layer is not just the model call. It is the system around it: retrieval, memory, evals, latency budgets, fallbacks, and user-visible confidence.

My take: the next great AI apps will feel less like chatbots and more like reasoning engines with interfaces.
